We believe that by actively reducing our carbon footprint, we not only contribute to a healthier planet but also set a positive example for our trainees, partners, and the wider community.

Purpose of the Carbon Reduction Plan

This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our ambitious strategy to minimise our greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards a more sustainable business model. It serves as a roadmap for identifying and implementing carbon reduction measures, setting clear targets, and monitoring our progress. By proactively addressing our environmental impact, we aim to demonstrate leadership in sustainability within the training sector and inspire others to take similar action.

Baseline Emissions Assessment

To establish a clear starting point for our carbon reduction journey, we will conduct a comprehensive assessment of our current greenhouse gas emissions. This assessment will cover the following:

Identify Emission Sources:
We will categorise our emissions into three scopes as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol:

Scope 1: Direct Emissions
– Company-owned vehicles (if any)
– On-site fuel combustion (e.g., gas boilers for heating, if applicable)
Given the nature of our business as a training provider, we anticipate Scope 1 emissions to be relatively low.

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy
– Electricity consumption at our training centre(s) and offices
– Heating and cooling systems (if not included in Scope 1 due to on-site fuel combustion)

Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions
– Employee commuting to and from work
– Business travel (including flights, train journeys, and car travel)
– Waste generated from our operations (e.g., paper, packaging, IT equipment)
– Purchased goods and services (e.g., office supplies, IT equipment, catering)
We recognise that Scope 3 emissions are likely to constitute a significant portion of our overall carbon footprint, and we are committed to addressing these indirect emissions through our supply chain engagement and sustainable procurement practices.

Calculate Emissions
Baseline Year: We will select a recent year (e.g., 2023) as our baseline to establish a reference point for measuring progress.
Data Collection: We will gather relevant data, including:
– Energy bills (electricity, gas)
– Fuel consumption records (if applicable)
– Travel logs and expense reports
– Waste disposal records
– Procurement data
Calculation Methodology: We will utilise appropriate emission factors and calculation tools, such as those provided by DEFRA or other reputable sources, to convert activity data into greenhouse gas emissions (measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent or tCO2e).

Additional Considerations
We will strive to ensure data accuracy and completeness to the best of our ability.
If data gaps exist, we will make reasonable estimations based on available information and industry benchmarks.
We will periodically review and update our baseline assessment as our operations and data collection capabilities evolve.

By conducting this baseline emissions assessment, we will gain a clear understanding of our current carbon footprint, enabling us to set informed targets, prioritise reduction measures, and track our progress effectively.

Targets and Objectives

Work Works Training Solutions is committed to setting ambitious yet achievable targets for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. These targets will be aligned with national and international climate goals, while also taking into account the unique characteristics of our business and our capacity for change.

Set Ambitious Yet Achievable Targets

We recognise the urgency of climate action and aim to contribute meaningfully to global efforts. To ensure our targets are both challenging and realistic, we will:

  • Align with Science-Based Targets: We will strive to set targets that are in line with the latest climate science and contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • Consider Our Specific Context: We will take into account our current emissions profile, operational constraints, financial resources, and technological capabilities when setting targets.
  • Engage with Stakeholders: We will consult with our employees, partners, and other relevant stakeholders to gather input and ensure our targets are widely supported.

Define Timeframes

We will establish clear timeframes for achieving our emissions reduction objectives:

  • Short-term (2024-2026): Focus on quick wins and readily implementable actions to demonstrate early progress.
  • Medium-term (2027-2029): Implement more substantial changes and invest in longer-term solutions.
  • Long-term (2030 and beyond): Strive for significant emissions reductions and explore innovative approaches to achieve net-zero emissions.

Specify Emissions Reduction Objectives

We will set clear, measurable, and time-bound objectives for each scope of emissions and major emission source:

Scope 1 & 2 Emissions:

We recognise the urgency of climate action and aim to contribute meaningfully to global efforts. To ensure our targets are both challenging and realistic, we will:

  • Reduce direct and indirect emissions from our operations by 40% by 2030.
  • Increase our renewable energy procurement to 100% by 2025.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of our facilities by 20% by 2026.

Scope 3 Emissions:

We will establish clear timeframes for achieving our emissions reduction objectives:

  • Reduce emissions from employee commuting by 30% by 2030.
  • Reduce emissions from business travel by 50% by 2025.
  • Reduce waste generated from our operations by 50% by 2028.

  • Ensure that 80% of our suppliers have carbon reduction policies in place by 2026.

Action Plan

Identify and Prioritize Reduction Measures

  • Energy Efficiency: Upgrade equipment, improve insulation, install smart meters.
  • Sustainable Travel: Encourage public transport, cycling, carpooling and promote car share schemes. Offer more virtual training options to reduce fuel consumption
  • Waste Reduction: Implement recycling programmes, minimise single-use items, promote sustainable procurement and work towards a paperless office by the end of 2025
  • Supply Chain Management: Monitor and ensure suppliers have carbon reduction policies in place
  • Employee Engagement: Educate and involve staff in carbon reduction efforts, incentivising them to adopt sustainable practices
Assign Responsibility:
Sheraz Hussain is responsible for ensuring that we keep up with our carbon reduction goals and overseeing the implementation of the action plan

Monitoring and Reporting

To ensure accountability and track our progress toward achieving our carbon reduction targets, we will establish a robust monitoring and reporting system. This system will involve:

Data Collection and Tracking: We will implement procedures to consistently and accurately collect data related to our energy consumption, travel patterns, waste generation, and other relevant activities. This will involve utilizing smart meters, maintaining travel logs, and implementing waste tracking systems.

Regular Measurement and Analysis: We will calculate our emissions periodically (e.g., quarterly or annually) using the collected data and compare them to our baseline and targets. This analysis will help us identify areas of success, areas for improvement, and potential adjustments to our action plan.

Transparent Reporting: We will share our progress internally with our employees and externally with our stakeholders, including clients, partners, and the wider community. We may also consider public reporting to demonstrate our commitment to transparency and accountability.

    Review and Adaptation

We recognise that our Carbon Reduction Plan is a dynamic document that needs to evolve alongside our business and the changing climate landscape. To ensure its continued effectiveness, we will:

Regular Reviews: Conduct periodic reviews (e.g., annually) of our plan to assess our progress, identify any barriers or challenges, and adapt our strategies as needed. This will involve evaluating the effectiveness of our implemented measures and identifying opportunities for further improvement.

Target Updates: As we achieve milestones and gain new insights, we will consider raising our ambition levels and updating our targets to reflect our evolving capabilities and the latest climate science.

Stay Informed: Continuously monitor new technologies, best practices, and policy changes that could impact our carbon reduction efforts. We will participate in relevant industry forums and engage with sustainability experts to stay at the forefront of innovation and ensure our plan remains relevant and effective.

By committing to these monitoring, reporting, and adaptation processes, we ensure that our Carbon Reduction Plan remains a living document that guides our journey towards a more sustainable future.
